Nudging for the Truth

Description
Fake news, misinformation and disinformation are everywhere. Social media is making the problem worse by strengthening our social and political bubbles. Yet, from our previous Demola projects, we found that “nudging” might be an interesting way to expand these bubbles. Nudge theory, which is used mainly in behavioural economics and social psychology to influence decision-making (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nudge_theory), could potentially be applied to social media bubbles as well. How might we gradually expand people’s social and political bubbles to show them more varied and trusted news sources? How can we utilize the unconscious exposure to diverse opinions and viewpoints to enhance critical thinking and media literacy? What are the concrete tools to do this? Should the solutions be embedded into social media platforms or, for example, our smart devices? In this project, we will design and build concrete demos to enable people to enjoy different points of view and quality news information. Join us in the fight for truthful news and disarm the troll factories.
