Data is created all around us, all the time. The key problem is not whether we can collect data, but how we can better utilise it. This issue is particularly evident in industrial use cases where various organisations work towards the same goal: customer value and satisfaction. Organisations struggle to share data with one another because, once shared, they easily lose track of it. What if someone else builds a huge business from your data without your organisation benefiting? What if it is used for illegal purposes? This challenge focuses on designing a conceptual “digital thread” that connects various stages and stakeholders within an industrial value chain (e.g., raw material suppliers, machinery providers, process optimisation software, logistics, end-users). The goal is to demonstrate how shared, real-time data from different sources can be utilised by different organisations transparently. How can we track the “digital thread” of data – for example, by watermarking data when it is shared? How can we encourage data utilisation within a controlled group of organisations? How might we create a fair business model for the data economy, ensuring everyone receives their fair share of the profits? In this project, we aim to create concepts and demonstrations of a digital environment where data can be tracked and its utilisation followed.
