Human Beings in the Modern World

OpenMind2Disability

Description

In general, people with physical or mental disabilities are isolated in Private Charitable Institutions and their lack of interaction with the community is notorious. The number of activities developed with them outside the Institution is low. This isolation does not favour the development of skills of disabled people that are commonly underestimated by society. Also the day-to-day life of disabled persons in an Institution is monotonous and the number of activities that stimulate creativity and originality needs to be improved in order to boost their well-being and self-esteem. In addition, the lack of equalisation of opportunities and treatment between people with and without disability in the labour market is notorious.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities adopted by the United Nations in 2006 was a historic milestone in universal human rights (dignity, integrity, equality and non-discrimination) of persons with disabilities. However, despite the fact that in the last decades there has been a growth trend in the progress achieved in the human rights of disabled persons, disparities persist in some areas such as access to employment, risk of poverty and social exclusion. In this context, an improvement in the knowledge, awareness and integration of disabled persons is absolutely needed to minimize the phenomena of diminution, social exclusion and segregation of this kind of persons in society.

1 - How to minimize the monotony of the daily routine of disabled people, specially of those with multiple disabilities, what activities could stimulate their attention? How should these dynamics be operationalized?

2 - How to promote effective interaction between disabled persons and their local community?

3 - How to build new paths in raising employers' awareness of equal opportunities for disabled persons which include certain specific professional skills?

4 - Can technology help to combat stereotyping in society? Can artificial intelligence be a helpful tool for improving social equity of the people in question?

5 - How to identify and combat the main physical barriers that prevent full active participation of people with motor disabilities in society?
