Description
Sustainability is advancing rapidly through different industries and consumers are increasingly aware of its importance. Software industry is very different from traditional industries. For example, in manufacturing industry most of the emissions are produced during the manufacturing process and logistics. In software industry manufacturing (developing) and logistics (distribution) are not the main concerns. Most of the emissions in software come from the use of the services. On the other hand, consumers are not necessarily thinking their smart phone apps or computer software has any impact on the climate change or reaching the net-zero goals. Currently the studies show that ICT sector contributes to 3,9 % of the global greenhouse gases, but it is projected to rise to 14 % by 2040. There’s a growing need to inform consumers about the sustainability of software and for this we want to explore what a “green passport” for sustainable software would mean.
What properties should green passport for software have and how should the information be visualized? For example, how to visualize the whole energy usage of your apps from the servers to your device? What kind of value might green passports for software provide for the end-users?
Join the project to create concrete demos of green passport for software!
