Description
Healthcare regions in Finland utilise a Home Hospital service (Kotisairaala) to provide hospital-level care in patients' homes. It serves individuals needing acute, subacute, or palliative care who can be treated outside a traditional hospital. The team, comprising doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, offers services such as intravenous therapies, wound care, medication management, monitoring vital signs, and symptom control. The aim is to support recovery in a familiar environment, reduce hospital stays, and enhance quality of life while keeping patients close to their families.
Effective resource planning – to plan, follow and react to dynamic situations on the field – is essential for the Home Hospital service. Professionals on the move need to know where cars, equipment, and staff are, who is best equipped to respond to emergencies, and how unnecessary travel can be avoided. How can we make their daily work smoother?
This project focuses on exploring creative ways to help nurses and other visiting professionals maximise the value of the resource planning system, using a mobile-first approach tailored to their on-field needs. What are the core challenges these professionals face in their daily Home Hospital work? How can we make their tasks smoother by increasing transparency through the resource planning environment? In this project, we will design, demonstrate, and test different approaches for the on-field professionals’ user interface and functionalities within the resource planning system.
