The path of stones

O caminho das pedras

DESIGNED TOGETHER WITH Secil

What are we really willing to sacrifice in our lifestyle for the sake of preserving the environment and sustainability? How can we reconcile human activity and the preservation of the environment, without placing problems at other people's doors?

Background

The cement industry is recognized as being of high added value and essential for the development of countries. The cement is an irreplaceable material for the safety, comfort and heritage of urban populations, and its demand is not expected to decrease in the coming years, however the extraction of the necessary raw material and the production process have high impacts on the landscape, and in the environment. When a cement factory is located inside a Natural Park of rare landscape beauty, with high environmental value and close to an important city, there are easily manifestations of displeasure and protest by a part of the population.
The cement company which operates legally since 1906 and has environmental certification, decided to invest heavily in the modernization of the factory to reduce its carbon footprint and improve its energy efficiency, to ensure its sustainability and compliance with the goals established in the Paris agreement. Investments in the modernization of the manufacturing unit, recognized as beneficial to the environment, are contested by some people who, in defense of the environment, aspire to close the facilities and cease activity in that location. However, we must not forget that there is another side of the coin, as the livelihoods of hundreds of families depend on the activity of the cement factory.

Challenge

Making the social and economic development of a region compatible with the defense of the landscape and the environment is fundamental for harmony, although it is not always easy to achieve. It is essential to invest in a strong technological upgrade of the industrial process to improve operating conditions and preserve the environment, but will it be enough to satisfy all stakeholders? How can we find the balance between the natural park and the cement industry that has existed in that location for a hundred years?
